After months of uncertainty and concern for his health, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has reemerged in the public eye, bringing relief to many of his supporters. On Thursday, Kanze Dena, the spokesperson for the Office of the Fourth President, made a significant announcement via a post on X, revealing that Kenyatta had arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He is set to participate in the 15th High-Level Retreat dedicated to enhancing peace and stability across the African continent.

This crucial retreat, convened by the African Union (AU) Commission, aims to evaluate the AU’s role and effectiveness in addressing conflicts that afflict various regions in Africa. Social media was abuzz with photos showing Uhuru engaging with high-ranking AU officials, including Bankole Adeoye, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. These interactions mark a pivotal moment in reaffirming his commitment to continental peace. In the announcement, Dena stated

, “His Excellency President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, for the 15th High-Level Retreat on Promoting Peace, Security, and Stability in Africa.”

The retreat’s agenda prominently features discussions on the Impact and Sustainability of the AU’s Preventive Diplomacy and Mediation strategies in conflict resolution across Africa. Notably, Kenyatta seemed to be in high spirits upon his arrival in Côte d’Ivoire, dispelling much of the negativity surrounding his recent absence from the public sphere.

Since transitioning the presidency to William Ruto, Uhuru has devoted himself to peace-building endeavors in several troubled areas, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. His focus on resolving conflicts underscores his enduring commitment to the region.

Back in late September, unfounded rumors circulated online, alleging that Uhuru was critically ill and in need of medical care. This speculation was particularly troubling, given that the former president’s last verified appearance occurred on June 14, 2024, in Nigeria. Fortunately, one of his loyal confidants, Pauline Njoroge, stepped forward to counter these damaging claims. She firmly stated that the rumors were not only false but were also intended to tarnish his reputation.

People create fictional narratives to share on social media. This time, it’s a damaging story about someone’s health, implying they are critically ill and in intensive care. What drives someone to spread such harmful misinformation? Is it simply for likes?” Njoroge remarked.

Uhuru Kenyatta’s return to the international stage serves as a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of adversity. His commitment to peace and stability in Africa remains unwavering, and his recent activities are a testament to his enduring legacy as a leader dedicated to the betterment of the continent. As he engages with fellow leaders and contributes to meaningful discussions, it is clear that Uhuru Kenyatta continues to be a vital figure in promoting unity and healing across Africa.
