Kenyan environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has earned international recognition after being officially certified by Guinness World Records for completing the longest marathon hugging a tree, lasting an extraordinary 72 consecutive hours. The record-breaking feat was achieved on December 11 in Nyeri County, where Muthoni endured cold temperatures, persistent rain, and physical exhaustion to complete the challenge without taking a break.

Guinness Confirms New World Record

In a statement shared on its official platforms, Guinness World Records confirmed that Muthoni shattered the previous record of 48 hours, which she had also set earlier in 2025, confirming her as the longest marathon hugging tree. The organization noted that the attempt was driven by Muthoni’s commitment to protect indigenous trees and celebrate the knowledge of Indigenous communities.

Championing Indigenous Tree Conservation

Muthoni has become a prominent voice in Kenya’s environmental movement, widely recognized for her advocacy for reforestation and the preservation of native tree species. Her work strongly opposes the unchecked cutting down of indigenous trees and promotes community-led conservation efforts across the country. In a previous interview, she explained that her activism is rooted in building an emotional connection between people and nature.

I want people to fall in love with nature so they don’t harm it. Conservation starts with love. We must nurture a million trees before we plant a million trees

National Recognition and Presidential Honor

Muthoni’s impact has not gone unnoticed at the national level. On December 15, President William Ruto appointed her as an ambassador for Kenya’s ambitious 15-billion-tree planting campaign. The President also awarded her the Head of State Commendation (HSC) Medal, praising her courage, resilience, and leadership in environmental conservation.

Government Support and Global Exposure

Further support was announced, with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board set to sponsor a holiday experience for Muthoni and her team. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry will support her planned visit to Brazil, an initiative aimed at expanding her exposure to global conservation efforts and strengthening her role as an environmental leader.
