alang’o Announces Bid for Nairobi Senate Seat in 2027 General Election

Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Oduor, widely known as Jalang’o, has declared his intention to run for the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, expressing confidence in his leadership record and first-term performance. Speaking in an interview, the first-time legislator said he believes he is capable of vying for any elective office, including the Nairobi gubernatorial position, but has chosen the Senate due to its critical oversight role. Jalang’o noted that his experience serving Lang’ata residents has prepared him to oversee the management and utilisation of county resources across the capital.

The work of an MP revolves around oversight and management of public resources. If we have delivered in Lang’ata, then we can help transform Nairobi by properly supervising how county funds are used

Priority Issues for Nairobi

The MP stated that he is well-versed in the challenges affecting Nairobi residents. He identified road infrastructure, sanitation, water supply, security, and healthcare as key sectors that require focused oversight and sustained intervention.

Criticism of Incumbent Senator

Jalang’o also weighed in on the performance of current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. While acknowledging Sifuna’s strength in political mobilisation, he faulted him on his oversight record. He argued that the senator has not been sufficiently vocal on pressing issues affecting city residents and questioned the frequency of his public engagement on Nairobi’s core challenges.

I respect our Secretary General Sifuna. Politically, he has done well, but on oversight, he has fallen short. Loyalty to the party should never come before fighting for the people

On Seeking Higher Office After One Term

Addressing criticism over his decision to pursue a higher seat after only one term as MP, Jalang’o dismissed calls for him to wait longer. He said there is no constitutional or legal requirement dictating how long a leader must serve before contesting another position. He referenced past political transitions, including that of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, as examples that leadership progression after one term is not unprecedented.

Party Ticket and Political Positioning

Jalang’o confirmed he will vie on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket and voiced confidence in clinching the party nomination, whether ODM runs independently or within a coalition framework. He emphasised that party primaries would ultimately determine the flag bearer. The legislator further dismissed claims that his Senate bid is being driven by external political forces, including alleged backing from President William Ruto, insisting the decision is entirely personal. While reaffirming his loyalty to ODM, Jalang’o said he aligns with what he termed the party’s legitimate leadership and will centre his campaign on grassroots voter engagement rather than political patronage.
