Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on Parliament to urgently form a joint committee to investigate the violent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu County, warning that such incidents pose a serious threat to democracy and public safety.

Speaking at Kisumu Central Police Station, Governor Orengo urged both the National Assembly and the Senate to table motions to establish an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the assault, which left the lawmaker injured.

I am appealing to Parliament to form a committee to enquire into the beating and injury of the senator. Through that mechanism, those involved will have to answer questions before the public

The governor emphasized that a parliamentary probe would offer an independent and transparent platform to establish the facts, particularly amid concerns that security agencies’ investigations have been slow. Several suspects captured on CCTV footage and widely shared on social media, Orengo noted, have yet to be arrested, raising doubts about the commitment to justice.

He warned that failure to act decisively could embolden criminal elements, normalise violence in politically charged situations, and threaten the safety of ordinary citizens. “This is not just intolerance. This is political terrorism. In my long political career, I have never witnessed such a situation,” Orengo said.

Governor Orengo stressed that Parliament’s intervention is crucial to restoring public confidence in the rule of law and ensuring accountability in state institutions tasked with protecting citizens. He urged lawmakers to act swiftly and decisively, cautioning that continued inaction could undermine constitutional rights, including the right to life and security.

He further called on authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice, asserting that Kenya must not allow a culture of impunity to take root.
