Rainfall is set to continue across several parts of Kenya this week, according to the latest forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department. Areas expected to receive rain include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the Coast, and parts of north-eastern Kenya.

In its weekly outlook covering May 26 to June 1, 2026, the weatherman has cautioned that the Coast region may experience heavy rainfall in some areas. Residents should expect intermittent showers occurring in the morning, afternoon, and night, occasionally spreading across wider areas.

For regions in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, mornings will generally be sunny. However, afternoon and night showers accompanied by thunderstorms are likely in a few places. Meanwhile, in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, mornings are expected to be cloudy with occasional showers, followed by sunny intervals. Rain may return later in the afternoon and night in some areas.

In north-eastern Kenya, residents can expect sunny conditions during the day and partly cloudy nights. However, rainfall may develop in the mornings and later in the day during the second half of the forecast period. The south-eastern lowlands will remain largely sunny during the day with partly cloudy nights, although isolated afternoon showers could occur in a few locations.

The department also noted that:

  • Daytime temperatures are likely to exceed 30°C in the Coast, north-eastern, north-western regions, and parts of the south-eastern lowlands.
  • Night-time temperatures could drop below 10°C in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and areas around Mt Kilimanjaro.

Looking back at the period between May 18 and May 24, rainfall was recorded in several regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of north-eastern Kenya. However, the rainfall amounts were significantly lower compared to the previous week. The highest weekly rainfall total of 61.5mm was recorded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) station in Nairobi. The same station also registered the highest 24-hour rainfall on May 21.
