Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has signaled a shift in political strategy, expressing readiness to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua despite their past differences. Sifuna emphasized that the opposition’s primary objective, removing President William Ruto from office, takes precedence over previous political battles.
Speaking during an interview on The Explainer show on Citizen TV, Sifuna said the opposition, under the Linda Mwananchi movement, is open to collaborating with anyone committed to defending the Constitution and the rule of law. According to him, shared values and a united front are more important than past disagreements, especially in the push to challenge President Ruto’s leadership.
Despite extending an olive branch, Sifuna maintained that his decision to support Gachagua’s impeachment was justified. He pointed to what he described as misconduct, including alleged interference in Nairobi County affairs. Drawing from his legal background, Sifuna argued that the matter should now be considered settled, noting that Gachagua has already faced the consequences.
Sifuna further suggested that Gachagua has a key role to play in the opposition’s plans, given his past alliance with President Ruto. He noted that the former deputy president may feel a personal responsibility to help steer the country in a different direction. The senator stressed that such collaboration is driven by a broader national interest rather than individual political histories.
Addressing allegations that lawmakers were bribed to support Gachagua’s impeachment, Sifuna firmly dismissed the claims. He insisted that his vote was based solely on principle and his previously stated positions regarding Gachagua’s conduct. His remarks came in response to claims by Junet Mohamed, who alleged that money exchanged hands during the impeachment process.
Sifuna’s remarks highlight the shifting dynamics within Kenya’s opposition politics, where former rivals may now find common ground. As alliances evolve, the focus appears to be on building a united front ahead of future political contests.
