Bernadette Musundi to chair IEBC selection panel

The IEBC selection panel has unanimously elected Bernadette Musundi from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops to chair and spearhead the process of recruiting new commissioners to the electoral body.The maiden meeting of the select committee also saw Abdulghafur Albusaidy who represents the Muslim community elected as vice chair. The panel is now expected to start work immediately in putting up a new commission.

Presiding over the swearing in of the nine IEBC commissioners selection panel, Chief Justice David Maraga set the stage for the recruitment exercise to replace Isaack Hassan and his team.

Fully cognizant of the fast approaching election date, the commission exuded confidence that they would hit the deadline in putting up a new transparent commission.

The selection panel now has seven days from its swearing in to:

1. Invite application from qualified persons
2. Publish names of applicants and qualifications in Kenya gazette and website of PSC
3. Shortlist and interview applicants
4. Forward names of 11 persons to president
i) 2 persons qualified as Chairperson
ii) 9 persons qualified to be members of commission
5. President to pick 7 out of 11 names for
i) One Chairperson
ii) Six full-time commissioners upon approval by the National Assembly

1. Invite application from qualified persons
2. Publish names of applicants

4. Forward names of 11 persons to president
i) 2 persons qualified as Chairperson
ii) 9 persons qualified to be members
5. President to pick 7 names
i) One Chairperson
ii) Six full-time commissioners

Isaack Hassan and the eight other commissioners will however remain in office until a new team takes over later this year.

Musundi is currently the Chairperson of the Strathmore University Council and a director in the Transparency International – Kenya Chapter Board.
