Fire Lays Waste To Mathare Slum

At 2 am on the morning of 31st August a fire started in the informal settlement of Mathare that has razed homes and buildings as well as claimed 2 lives thus far.

As of the publishing of this article, the cause of the fire is still not yet known and the county’s fire brigade is yet to respond.

There was a commotion in the early hours of the day as residents could be heard shouting to alert each other and trying to save their valuables.

Inhabitants of the destroyed homes said there wasn’t enough water to put out the fire on their own. The water shortage in the area is chronic and residents have resorted to using drainage water for their needs.  

The locals have pleaded with the county government to come to their aid with temporary residences as they struggle to rebuild their homes.
