Pep Guardiola says Man City are ready for Champions League group stage

Pep Guardiola says his Manchester City team are ready for the Champions League group stage, after they completed a comprehensive 6-0 aggregate victory over Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday.City lead the tie 5-0 going into the second leg at the Etihad, and Fabian Delph’s header secured a 1-0 win on the night in which Joe Hart started as captain.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Guardiola said: “We are ready for the Champions League. These players and club deserve it.

“It was not easy with 10 players behind the ball but in the second half we adjusted and attacked much better. The spirit was amazing. Now is a day to celebrate our qualification for the Champions League.”

City’s win means they take their place in pot two of Thursday’s Champions League draw, but they could still face the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

No such problems for Steaua Bucharest, though, who will make their way into the Europa League draw.

The Romanian side never really looked like beating Joe Hart in the second leg, but coach Laurentiu Reghecampf looked for positives in the aftermath.

“We were more organised but the difference was the hugely valuable players City have,” he said.

“It was a beautiful experience for us. We have lots to learn. We have met one of the most powerful teams in Europe and I hope we will have a better route in the Europa League.”
