Russia starts on a positive note in 2017 Confederations Cup

The 2017 Confederations Cup started with hosts Russia recording a vital 2-0 win against New Zealand in Saint Petersburgh Saturday night.

The hosts pressurized New Zealand from the earliest moments, forcing the All Whites to drop deep and protect their goal.

Poloz had a shot cleared off the line for the hosts and was then brought down by goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic in a moment of controversy as the referee signaled to play on.

Glushakov broke the deadlock after 31 minutes after the New Zealand defence went to sleep, allowing the hosts to claim a vital lead going into half-time.

New Zealand failed to recover in the second half, and they were totally outclassed as Russia chased a potential landslide.

The second strike finally arrived as Smolov tapped home from close range after starting the move that finished with his goal.

Russia’s second game will be against European Champions Portugal on the 21st of June.
