TENSION IN BARINGO COUNTY AFTER ONE PERSON DIES AND 70 HERDS OF CATTLE ARE STOLEN

Tension is high in Baringo county following the death one person and theft of over 70 heards of cattle. Schools in the region which had reopened have now been closed with residents fleeing their homes for fear of more attacks from the neighboring Pokot community.

Residents of Arabal area in Baringo county held demonstrations in Marigat town to compel the Government to protect them from the attacks that have left scores residents homeless.

The residents have lamented that schools which had reopened and started admissions of a number of pupils, have now been closed.

The 3 schools in the region were closed as the residents fled the area for fear of attack from the suspected Pokot bandits.

This comes hot on the heels of the peace crusade that has been intensified in the area. The area residents say that the peace efforts are proving to be elusive as days go by.

Particularly the residents have attributed the prevailing tension to a cultural initiation that took place recently.

They say the rite of passage has seen the graduates look for possible ways of find the herds required for dowry payment.

Government move to register illegal firearms and forceful disarmament are yet to bear fruits since it is estimated that over 300 firearms are in Baringo with only 40 of this lot being in safe hands.
