Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has voiced a compelling argument for the future of Kenyan leadership, suggesting that the next president should emerge from the younger generations, specifically Generation Z or millennials—those aged between 27 and 43 years. Mutunga has expressed his concerns regarding the political climate, noting that many leaders from his own generation often resort to tribalism, making them ill-suited for the responsibilities of governance. He stated,
“I believe the next wave of leadership should come from Gen Zs and millennials. Our generation tends to perpetuate tribal divisions, which I encountered during my time as Chief Justice. For instance, there was a perception among the Kamba community that the Judiciary belonged solely to them, which hindered progress in establishing courts in areas like Lodwar.”
During a recent event that marked the 12-year anniversary of the Supreme Court under the new Constitution, Mutunga underscored the significance of an independent Judiciary. He called upon citizens to rally behind this vital institution, highlighting its role as the guardian of citizens’ rights.
“The journey toward judicial independence involves all of us. Currently, we have two offices for former Chief Justices, and with newly allocated funding, these offices should proactively defend the integrity of the Judiciary,”
In addition, he proposed the creation of an official position for retired Chief Justices to ensure the Constitution is upheld and respected.Through his insights, Mutunga advocates for a generational shift in political leadership alongside a reinforced commitment to an independent and robust Judiciary.
His call to action resonates with many who are eager to see fresh perspectives guide the nation toward a brighter future.
