Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sharply criticised President William Ruto ahead of his national address, urging him to focus on accountability and honesty rather than long-term promises. Speaking at his Nyeri residence during a meeting with clergy, Gachagua claimed Kenyans expect clear answers on pressing national issues, not broad visions for the future.
Gachagua questioned the government’s record over the past year, pointing to what he described as failures in security, healthcare, and education. He urged the President to explain what his administration has achieved instead of unveiling new long-term development plans. He also alleged that the President could introduce a Vision 2060 strategy, cautioning former President Uhuru Kenyatta against being involved in such an initiative.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader raised concerns about the electoral process, accusing the government of attempting to interfere with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He called for transparency, insisting that election results should continue to be live-streamed to maintain public trust.
Gachagua further criticised the government’s handling of security, alleging an increase in abductions and extrajudicial actions targeting young protesters. He claimed the overall security situation in the country had worsened.
He also took aim at members of the President’s inner circle, accusing some officials of engaging in political attacks instead of focusing on service delivery. In particular, he criticised the Health Ministry’s leadership, calling for greater attention to reforms in the healthcare sector.
Beyond politics, Gachagua highlighted ongoing challenges in education funding and raised concerns about the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying the government must address these issues urgently.
