The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of a robbery with violence suspect who allegedly died by suicide while in custody at the Kisumu Central Police Station last week.
According to IPOA Nyanza Regional Coordinator, Paul Murkomen, officers from the authority have already recorded statements from police personnel who were on duty at the time of the incident.
Murkomen revealed that IPOA is also in the process of tracing the family of the deceased, identified as Kelvin Oduor, popularly known by his alias Kevo. He noted that the ongoing investigation seeks to establish whether Oduor’s death was self-inflicted or if foul play was involved.
He further confirmed that a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Reports indicate that the deceased had been arrested on Monday, October 27, in connection with a robbery with violence case and was remanded for 14 days pending his next court appearance.
However, on Friday, October 31, Oduor was reportedly found hanging in the bathroom of the police cells. Officers at the station claimed that he had taken his own life.
IPOA has assured the public that it will carry out a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident to ensure accountability and transparency.
