Over 100 Families Displaced as Bulldozers Demolish Homes on Disputed Marurui Land

More than 100 families have been left devastated after their homes were demolished on contested land in the Marurui area along Nairobi’s Northern Bypass. The operation, carried out under heavy security, reduced multi-million-shilling houses to rubble, leaving residents scrambling to salvage what they could.

The demolitions began on Monday, with bulldozers moving in to bring down both completed and partially constructed houses. Police officers were deployed in large numbers to maintain order and oversee the exercise. Perimeter walls were first torn down before the demolition crews proceeded to flatten entire structures. By Tuesday, the once upscale neighborhood had been completely transformed into a scene of destruction.

Homeowners watched helplessly as their investments were destroyed, many expressing frustration and despair. Some families had already moved in, while others were preparing to occupy what they believed were their dream homes. Affected residents said they were caught off guard despite earlier warnings, and were seen rushing to remove household items as the demolitions continued.

The property in question has been at the center of a legal battle dating back to 2019. The court recently ruled that the land had been illegally subdivided and sold to unsuspecting buyers. In its decision, the Environment and Land Court affirmed Langton Investments as the rightful owner and ordered the cancellation of all irregular land titles issued to buyers.

Court documents revealed that a private entity allegedly carried out an unlawful subdivision of the land before selling it. The court declared the process illegal and directed that all ownership documents arising from the subdivision be revoked. This ruling paved the way for the registered owner to reclaim the land, leading to the ongoing demolitions.

The incident highlights the risks associated with purchasing land without thorough verification. Despite public notices warning of the dispute, many buyers proceeded with transactions, ultimately leading to significant financial losses.

As families come to terms with the destruction of their homes, the Marurui demolitions serve as a stark reminder of the importance of due diligence in land transactions. The aftermath leaves not only physical ruins but also emotional and financial distress for those affected.
