Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has officially launched his bid to run for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Mwangi made the announcement on Wednesday, August 27th 2025, during Katiba Day celebrations at Ufungamano House, marking a symbolic step in what he calls a transition toward a new chapter for Kenya.

Mwangi Joins 2027 Presidential Race

With his declaration, Mwangi joins a growing list of aspirants seeking to unseat President William Ruto in 2027. Other notable figures who have expressed interest in the presidency include Mumias East MP Peter Salasya and former Chief Justice David Maraga, among others.

Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Future

During the launch, Mwangi called on Kenyans to reflect on his journey as a social justice champion over the years, using the occasion to mark 15 years since the promulgation of the Constitution.

To mark 15 years since the promulgation of the Constitution, let’s gather to honour what we have done together, out of love for our country,

He added that Kenyans have always fought for a better country and this is the time they should use to unveil new possibilities of building the Kenya that works for the people

A Call for Integrity and Clean Leadership

Mwangi made it clear that his campaign and leadership would be built on integrity and transparency, stating that he would only work with “clean” individuals.

If I take this water and it is clean now, and I put a drop of urine, human waste, or cow dung, it will be contaminated. It will be a mistake for me to try to work with anyone who is contaminated,

Boniface Mwangi

He emphasized that real change cannot come from recycling leaders who have previously been in government but failed to deliver tangible benefits to the people.

Past Arrest and Dropped Charges

In July, Mwangi was arrested and charged with terrorism, though the charges were later dropped. He was apprehended at his Lukenya home in Machakos County by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Authorities claimed that his arrest was linked to alleged coordination and facilitation of acts classified as terrorism under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and during the operation, detectives reportedly recovered several items from his home and office, including two unused teargas canisters, Company seals (Brave Media Ltd and Courage Ltd), Stamp duty documents among other things. Mwangi was later on accused of playing a logistical and financial role in the June 25 protests, which saw the deaths of several protesters, destruction of public property, and injuries to security officers.

Conclusion

Despite the controversies surrounding him, Boniface Mwangi remains undeterred in his mission to bring transformative change to Kenya. His presidential bid signals a shift in the country’s political discourse, with a call for clean leadership, integrity, and a commitment to upholding the Constitution. As the 2027 elections draw closer, all eyes will be on Mwangi and how his bold vision resonates with the Kenyan electorate.
