The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has opened formal investigations into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who lost his life following a road traffic accident along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway. The fatal incident occurred in the Karai area in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, 2025, and involved Jirongo’s vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus operated by Climax Company Limited.
Details of the Crash Emerge
According to preliminary findings released by the DCI, the crash involved a head-on collision between the two vehicles. The impact was severe, with investigators indicating that Jirongo’s car was pushed several metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to a stop further down the road. Police reports place the time of the accident shortly after 2:19 a.m., prompting an immediate response from law enforcement officers and emergency personnel.
Forensic and Homicide Teams Deployed
Following the incident, a joint team comprising homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was dispatched to the scene. The team conducted initial examinations, documented the site, and secured key exhibits to aid in the investigation. As part of the inquiry, detectives obtained CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the scene of the crash. The footage has since undergone preliminary review and is expected to play a critical role in reconstructing the events leading up to the accident.
CCTV Footage Under Review
According to investigators, the CCTV footage shows Jirongo arriving at the petrol station shortly before the collision. Police say he entered the station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. Moments later, he was seen stopping at the station’s exit before making a turn back toward Nairobi. Shortly after exiting, the footage captures the PSV bus colliding with his vehicle. Detectives say the footage timeline is being carefully analyzed to establish vehicle movement, positioning, and possible contributing factors.
PSV Driver Questioned, Released on Bail
The driver of the Climax Company Limited bus, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated by police and recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. Authorities confirmed that the driver was released on cash bail pending the conclusion of investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been instructed to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, as investigations continue.
Witness Statements Recorded
Investigators have also recorded statements from key witnesses, including the petrol station’s night guard and a fuel attendant, both of whom were on duty at the time of the incident and witnessed events leading up to the crash. Additionally, police plan to obtain statements from passengers who were aboard the PSV bus, as well as other motorists and pedestrians who may have been in the area.
Tracing Jirongo’s Final Movements
As part of the wider probe, detectives are examining Cyrus Jirongo’s movements before the accident. This includes recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier in the night, particularly those present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi. The DCI says further forensic analysis will be conducted, and investigators are expected to revisit the scene to gather additional evidence that may help clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash.
File to Be Forwarded to DPP
Once investigations are complete, police will compile a comprehensive file containing forensic findings, witness statements, and CCTV analysis. The file will then be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and further direction.
Burial Arrangements
Meanwhile, the family of the late former legislator has announced that Cyrus Jirongo will be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home on Tuesday, December 30. Jirongo served as Lugari MP and remained a prominent figure in Kenya’s political and business circles, with his death drawing widespread public attention and condolences from across the country.
