Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been unveiled as the leader and presidential candidate of The Equitable Party (TEP), setting the stage for his 2027 presidential campaign. Sifuna was unveiled during the party’s launch in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4, where he pledged to lead the outfit with integrity, accountability and respect for democratic principles.

The senator assured supporters that he would remain committed to the ideals upon which the party was founded as he prepares to seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

I want to assure you that I will not let you down

Sifuna promises people-centred leadership

The Nairobi senator said TEP would champion equal opportunities and a style of leadership that prioritises consultation, accountability and engagement with citizens. He said the party intends to listen to Kenyans before making decisions and provide explanations for its policies and actions. Sifuna also acknowledged that political change could not be achieved by one individual, arguing that the movement belongs to Kenyans who have embraced its ideals.

He said TEP would accept responsibility for decisions that do not deliver the desired results while creating room for democratic participation among its supporters. According to Sifuna, the party does not claim to have an instant solution to Kenya’s challenges but intends to create a political platform through which citizens can raise their concerns and seek solutions through democratic institutions.

Party outlines economic agenda

Sifuna said the party had brought together a team of experts to advise on governance and economic policy. He cited proposals aimed at addressing the cost of living and unemployment, including dealing with what he described as budgeted corruption. The senator claimed that such interventions could create room for the government to reconsider taxes affecting Kenyans, including the Housing Levy and Value Added Tax on fuel and electricity. He said the proposed measures would be aimed at easing economic pressure on households while addressing unemployment.

Leaders back Sifuna’s presidential bid

Several political leaders have publicly supported Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. Those who endorsed his bid during the party launch included Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Siaya Governor James Orengo.

Orengo said he remained convinced that Sifuna should pursue the presidency, reiterating his support for the senator’s political ambitions. The launch places Sifuna among several politicians who have begun positioning themselves and their political formations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

TEP slogan and membership details

The Equitable Party’s branding features green and yellow colours alongside scales of justice. The party’s slogan is “Tusawazishe.” The party has encouraged Kenyans interested in joining its ranks to use the *509# mobile service and select party code 100.

Linda Mwananchi Movement gets name reservation

Sifuna’s unveiling comes shortly after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties approved the reservation of the Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) name. The approval followed a decision by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, which directed the Registrar to reconsider the earlier refusal to reserve the name. The reservation is valid for up to 90 days as the promoters proceed with the remaining registration requirements.

Sifuna has also indicated that TEP could eventually be rebranded as Linda Mwananchi Movement, linking the party to the wider political movement he has been building ahead of the 2027 election. With the 2027 General Election approaching, Sifuna now joins a growing field of political figures positioning themselves for the presidential contest, while TEP begins the process of building its structures and political base.
