Eliud Owalo has officially stepped down from his role as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency, announcing that he will seek the presidency in the 2027 General Elections. Owalo made the announcement on Thursday, stating that his decision to resign takes immediate effect following his public declaration to challenge President William Ruto for the country’s top seat. In a message shared on social media, Owalo explained that continuing to serve in government would no longer be appropriate after declaring his presidential ambitions.

Having today announced my intention to run for President of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election, it is no longer tenable for me to continue serving as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency. I have therefore tendered my resignation with immediate effect

During his tenure, Owalo was entrusted by President Ruto with overseeing government performance, coordinating the delivery of key development programs, and promoting efficiency across state institutions. The former Cabinet Secretary is no stranger to national politics. He has previously vied for elective office and has held several senior government positions, most notably serving as Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, where he played a key role in advancing Kenya’s digital transformation agenda. Owalo’s resignation marks an early start to what is expected to be an intense political season ahead of the 2027 polls, as political alignments begin to take shape and potential contenders position themselves on the national stage.
