The government has confirmed that 84 people have lost their lives following recent flash floods that have affected several parts of the country. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Interior said multi-agency teams are working tirelessly to rescue those impacted, with three people still reported missing.

Authorities have raised an alarm after River Nyando overflowed, causing widespread flooding across parts of Kisumu County. Areas flagged as high-risk include Kakola, Onjiko, Kochogo, East Kano, Okanja, Kamidumbi, and Panadol. Additional concern has been raised for the lower sections of Kakola Ombaka Sub-Location and regions near streams such as Awach, Agala, Nyalbiego, Chamrogi, and Nyaidho.

Rescue operations are ongoing, led by teams from the Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Red Cross, and the Kisumu County disaster management unit. So far, 265 households, including six children, have been evacuated and are currently sheltered at safe locations such as the Ahero Assistant County Commissioner’s office, Ahero Catholic Pastoral Centre, and Ombaka Dispensary.

The Ministry has warned that continued heavy rainfall upstream could worsen the situation, particularly in Okanja, Kamidumbi, and Panadol, as well as areas surrounding Ahero Girls and Kakola Ombaka. Sections of the Kisumu–Nairobi road may also be affected. Residents have been urged to remain alert as emergency response teams stay on high standby.

In Tana River County, communities living near River Tana have been put on notice after the river burst its banks, flooding farms in Asako Village, Mbalambala Location. Meanwhile, in Uasin Gishu County, a multi-agency team is assessing flood impacts along River Sosiani in Lower Elgon View, Racecourse Location. Preliminary reports indicate that several residential and hospitality properties have experienced flooding, particularly in outdoor areas, due to rising water levels.

As heavy rains continue to pound various regions, authorities are urging Kenyans to stay vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. Rescue and response teams remain on the ground to manage the crisis and assist affected communities.
