Gachagua Hails Malawi’s Mutharika Victory, Urges Kenyans to Embrace Power of the Ballot

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has lauded Malawi’s President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika for clinching victory in the recently concluded presidential elections.

Taking to his official X account , Gachagua described Mutharika’s return to power as a “continental statement”, signaling that punitive leadership can be removed through the ballot.

It is a declaration that Africa, the rising continent and a home to 1.5 billion people, is no longer a playground for religious hypocrisy, conmanship, corruption, pathological lies, dictatorship, and self-serving regimes

Gachagua emphasized that the Malawi election result sends a strong message to leaders across Africa who cling to power through ill motives and disregard for the rule of law, stating plainly that “their days are numbered.” He invoked the fall of infamous African strongmen to underscore his point

A Call to Kenyan Voters Ahead of 2027

Reflecting on the significance of the Malawi vote, Gachagua noted that African citizens are increasingly politically aware and proactive.

In the same breath, he urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and take charge of their political destiny in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Mutharika Defeats Chakwera in Tight Race

Peter Mutharika, 85, made a surprise comeback, defeating incumbent Lazarus Chakwera in the September 16 presidential election. Mutharika previously served as Malawi’s President from 2014 to 2020, during which he was praised for improving infrastructure and lowering inflation. However, his term was also clouded by accusations of cronyism. claims he consistently denied.

Chakwera, on the other hand, faced mounting criticism during his tenure, especially over corruption, economic mismanagement, and failing to create jobs, which were among his key campaign promises.

Under Chakwera’s watch, Malawi, a largely rural and agriculture-dependent nation, experienced a steep rise in living costs, with inflation peaking at 33 percent. The price of maize—the staple food—and fertilizer skyrocketed, becoming major issues in the election.
