High Court Denies Bail to Officer Klinzy Baraza in Nairobi CBD Shooting Case

The High Court has refused to release police officer Klinzy Baraza on bail as he faces trial in a widely publicized shooting incident that led to the death of a civilian in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). In its ruling, the court observed that the circumstances of the shooting are highly unusual and have already attracted significant public attention. Judges noted concerns raised about the safety and well-being of the victim’s family, who have allegedly been subjected to harassment through persistent phone calls and messages following the incident.

Details of the Shooting

Baraza is charged with the fatal shooting of Boniface Kariuki on June 17, 2025. According to court records, Kariuki was selling face masks outside Imenti House in the Nairobi CBD when he was shot in the head. He was rushed for medical treatment but later died from his injuries.

Concerns Over Witness Interference

The court emphasized that Baraza’s position as a police officer grants him influence and access that could be used to interfere with witnesses or ongoing investigations. Prosecutors argued that these risks amounted to compelling reasons to deny bail. The judge agreed, stating that releasing the accused could threaten witness protection, victim safety, and broader public security.

Defense Plea Rejected

In his bail application, Baraza assured the court that he would abide by all conditions if released. He also cited family responsibilities, noting that he has a young family that depends on him. However, the court ruled that these personal circumstances were insufficient to override the risks highlighted by the prosecution.

Trial to Be Fast-Tracked

The court directed that the case be handled on a priority basis to ensure a swift trial. The matter was scheduled for mention before the court registry on February 17, 2026, with Baraza set to remain in custody as the trial proceeds.
