IPOA Launches Probe Into Fatal Police Shooting in Mukuru Kwa Njenga

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened investigations into the fatal shooting of Shukri Ibrahim, who was allegedly killed by a police officer in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Embakasi, Nairobi County. In a statement issued to newsrooms, IPOA confirmed that the incident occurred on January 11, 2026, and involved officers attached to the area.

Events Leading to the Shooting

According to IPOA, Ibrahim was travelling with Wycliff Nyakwama and Festus Mutinda while transporting a motor vehicle to a client in Imara Daima. Along the way, the vehicle was involved in a road accident with a matatu. A confrontation reportedly followed between the two drivers. After the matatu driver allegedly called for support from fellow operators, the three men drove away from the scene.

POA stated that the trio later parked near MCC School and began walking back towards the accident scene when they were intercepted by two police officers identified as Godwin Mjomba and Patrick Mutunga Titus. The officers allegedly ordered them to lie down.

Fatal Shooting Incident

During the encounter, Sergeant Godwin Mjomba is said to have discharged his firearm, shooting Shukri Ibrahim. The bullet struck him in the head, killing him on the spot.

Post-Mortem and Burial

IPOA supervised the post-mortem examination conducted later that day. The examination confirmed that Ibrahim died from a single penetrating gunshot wound to the head. he deceased was later laid to rest at Lang’ata Muslim Cemetery.

Officers Arrested and Detained

The two officers linked to the incident were arrested and presented before the Milimani Law Courts on Monday morning. The court granted IPOA’s application for custodial orders, allowing the suspects to be held for 14 days as investigations continue. IPOA stated that it will conduct thorough and independent investigations before making further recommendations.
