Iran Says Kenya Not a Target as It Plans Retaliation After US–Israel Strikes

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply after coordinated military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, prompting Iran to plan counter-measures. Amid growing regional concerns, Iran has publicly clarified that Kenya will not be a target in its response, despite earlier fears among some observers.

In a press briefing held in Nairobi, Iran’s Ambassador to Kenya, Dr. Ali Gholampour, moved to allay fears that Nairobi might be drawn into the conflict. He emphasized that Kenya, which does not host facilities capable of launching strikes against Iran, is not on Iran’s list of intended targets. The ambassador’s comments were aimed at reassuring the Kenyan public and diplomatic community as tensions continue after recent military engagements involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

Background: Rising Regional Tensions

The clarification from Tehran comes after a significant escalation triggered by a joint US–Israel military offensive against Iranian targets late last week. That action, which drew global attention, led to intensified hostilities, with Iran signalling it would pursue retaliation against what it describes as foreign aggression. In response, some governments, including Kenya’s, have taken steps to monitor the situation and advise their citizens in the broader Middle East to stay vigilant and follow safety guidance from local authorities.

What This Means for Kenya

For Kenyans, the reassurance from Iranian officials may help ease concerns about being caught up in a distant geopolitical conflict. The Kenyan government has been keeping a close watch on developments, particularly given the large number of Kenyan workers and travellers in the Middle East. While the wider conflict shows little sign of immediate resolution, Iran’s public assertion that Kenya is not a target seeks to reduce anxiety among Kenyans and prevent misunderstandings as the situation unfolds.
