On Monday, October 28, a significant milestone in educational assessment was reached as nearly 1.3 million sixth-grade students across Kenya embarked on their Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) as part of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This comprehensive evaluation seeks to gauge students’ understanding in six core subjects: Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science, Social Studies, and Creative Arts.

The exam timetable is thoughtfully structured, starting with Mathematics and English on Monday. Students will then tackle Integrated Science and Kiswahili on Tuesday, before concluding with Creative Arts and Social Studies on Wednesday. Launched in 2022, the KPSEA aims to facilitate a smooth transition for students moving into Junior Secondary School. The government has emphasized that this assessment is designed to create a more relaxed examination setting while prioritizing competency-based evaluation.

At the kickoff of the exams held in Westlands, Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos reassured the public that the Ministry has put robust measures in place to ensure the smooth running of all national examinations. He specifically addressed the situation in areas like Tana River, where security challenges have arisen, stating that examinations would take place within police stations to ensure the safety of candidates.

Furthermore, Migos affirmed the commitment to inclusivity by confirming that no student would be denied the opportunity to participate in the national assessments. This approach underscores the government’s dedication to providing a fair and equitable examination process for all learners.

As our young scholars step into this pivotal phase of their academic journey, the KPSEA marks not only a test of knowledge but also a testament to the commitment of educators, parents, and the government to fostering a supportive learning environment.
