Laikipia University has been shut down indefinitely following violent student protests that left several individuals injured. The closure comes amid rising tensions over alleged poor management and concerns surrounding student safety.
The protests were sparked by the tragic death of a first-year student, Hillary Vulimu, who reportedly slipped and fell at the Subukia Escarpment while in the company of fellow students. Despite efforts to save him, he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital last Friday.
Students claim that in the immediate aftermath of the accident, attempts to access emergency medical assistance were unsuccessful. They allege that the university ambulance was unavailable due to the Eid al-Fitr holiday, a factor that fueled anger and frustration across the campus.
On Monday, tensions boiled over after students failed to attend a scheduled meeting organized by the university administration to address their concerns. Instead, they took to the streets in protest, barricading the busy Nyahururu–Nakuru road. Anti-riot police were deployed to disperse the demonstrators, leading to running battles that lasted into the evening. Security officers were forced to use stronger measures as the situation escalated.
Several students sustained injuries during the clashes, with some reportedly suffering gunshot wounds. The injured are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. In response to the unrest, the university directed all students residing on campus to vacate immediately, effectively suspending operations until further notice.
In a statement, the institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs said the university is working closely with relevant authorities to restore calm. The administration also pledged to strengthen student welfare systems and improve engagement with the student body.
The closure of Laikipia University underscores the seriousness of the situation and highlights ongoing concerns about student safety and institutional accountability. As investigations continue, stakeholders will be keen to see measures put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
