The Luhya Elders Forum has officially endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, leader of the Linda Mwananchi movement, as their preferred opposition presidential candidate. The endorsement signals growing political momentum around Sifuna as the country gears up for the next General Election.
Speaking during a press briefing in Kakamega, the elders praised Sifuna’s leadership and national appeal, noting that his influence extends far beyond his home region. The meeting also marked a transition in leadership within the forum following the passing of former chairman Patrick Wangamati in July. Deputy chairman Noah Wekesa, who led the delegation, said the elders were confident in Sifuna’s ability to unite Kenyans and provide alternative leadership.
The elders urged Sifuna to work closely with other opposition leaders to form a united front capable of challenging President William Ruto. According to Wekesa, while Sifuna has emerged as a strong contender, collaboration remains key to success at the national level. He encouraged dialogue among opposition figures to agree on a single presidential candidate.
Forum members highlighted Sifuna’s extensive outreach across the country, noting that he has engaged with citizens in multiple counties and attracted widespread support from diverse groups. They described his rise as organic, driven by strong grassroots backing from youth, professionals, and ordinary citizens alike.
Although Sifuna was not present at the meeting, the elders expressed their intention to formally bless his political ambitions. They stated that his absence did not diminish their support, emphasizing their readiness to stand behind him as he navigates the political landscape.
During the same gathering, veteran politician and former ambassador Burudi Nabwera was appointed as the new chairman of the Luhya Elders Forum. He takes over from the late Patrick Wangamati, ushering in a new chapter for the group.
The endorsement adds a new dimension to the opposition’s strategy ahead of the elections. With calls for unity intensifying, Sifuna’s next steps—particularly in building alliances—could shape the direction of the race for State House.
