President William Ruto has led the nation in paying tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on what would have been his 81st birthday, marking the first such occasion since his passing. In a heartfelt statement, President Ruto described Raila as a true patriot whose life was defined by courage, sacrifice, and an unshakable commitment to Kenya. He said Raila’s lifelong faith in the country inspired generations of Kenyans and urged the nation to remember not only the man but the values he stood for.

According to the President, Raila consistently taught that the nation must always come before personal ambition. He noted that Raila believed unity was more important than political victory and peace more valuable than division, choosing reconciliation and stability even in moments of deep national tension. President Ruto called on Kenyans to honour Raila’s memory by rising above partisan politics, prioritising the common good, and continuing to believe in the Kenyan dream.

Leaders Reflect on Raila’s Enduring Legacy

Political leaders across the country joined Kenyans in remembering Raila Odinga’s immense contribution to the nation. Many described him as a resilient reformer, a defender of constitutionalism, and a central figure in Kenya’s struggle for multiparty democracy, social justice, and inclusive governance. Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka paid a brief but emotional tribute, describing Raila as a towering national figure whose influence on Kenya’s democratic journey will be felt for generations.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna acknowledged the difficulty of coming to terms with Raila’s death, noting that the posthumous birthday offered the nation a moment to pause in mourning, reflection, and gratitude. He described Raila as one of the most iconic leaders Kenya has ever produced, saying his life was defined by bravery, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief in freedom and justice.

Nyong’o: Raila Was a Political Giant and Africa’s Democratic Conscience

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o delivered one of the most profound reflections, describing Raila as Kenya’s political colossus and Africa’s democratic conscience. Governor Nyong’o said Raila did not merely participate in history but challenged it, forcing those in power to rethink their moral direction. He emphasised that Raila pursued equity, democracy, and structural justice at great personal cost.

According to Nyong’o, Raila belonged to a rare class of leaders whose lives were a sustained argument against injustice and an enduring critique of unequal power structures. He added that Raila’s absence has underscored how rare principled leadership has become, urging Kenyans to honour his legacy by defending his ideas and continuing the struggle for justice, equality, and national renewal. Nyong’o noted that history would remember Raila not as a man driven by titles or power, but as one who carried the weight of Kenya’s unrealised promises and defended truth without compromise.

A Life That Continues to Inspire

As the founder of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Raila Odinga is widely credited with transforming dissent into structured political engagement and mentoring generations of leaders committed to ethical politics and accountable governance.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also shared a brief message, marking January 7, 2026, as “Baba 80+1,” saying he remains forever in the hearts of Kenyans. Kenyans on social media echoed similar sentiments. One user described Raila as a giant whose life of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering vision left a lasting mark beyond Kenya’s borders and across generations.

Even in death, Raila’s legacy continues to shape conversations around democracy, accountability, and true leadership. While the man may be gone, many believe the ideals he championed remain a collective responsibility for the nation.
