President William Ruto has announced plans to reduce the cost of fertiliser in a bid to support farmers and revive agricultural production following recent crop failures. The move comes as the country prepares for the upcoming short rains season.
While addressing congregants at ACK Church Moiben in Uasin Gishu County, the President acknowledged that many farmers suffered losses due to failed rains. He encouraged them to take advantage of the anticipated short rains between now and December to return to their farms. Ruto assured farmers that the government would step in to make farming more affordable, revealing plans to lower prices for both fertiliser and seeds starting next year.
The President emphasized the importance of increased agricultural production in safeguarding the nation against food shortages. He said the government is committed to ensuring farmers have the resources they need to boost output and stabilize food supply.
Ruto also defended his proposal to introduce Vision 2060, a long-term development blueprint meant to succeed the current Vision 2030 plan initiated under former President Mwai Kibaki. He noted that Vision 2030 was developed before the 2010 Constitution and said the new plan would align more closely with constitutional provisions and the country’s evolving needs.
The President called for a nationwide dialogue to shape the new development agenda, urging Kenyans to actively contribute their ideas. He stressed that the process would be transparent and inclusive, dismissing claims that it was politically motivated.
Ruto criticized opposition leaders who have opposed the Vision 2060 plan, questioning their resistance to public engagement. He maintained that the initiative is not linked to the 2027 General Election and accused critics of lacking a clear development agenda.
The fertiliser subsidy and broader agricultural support signal a renewed focus on food security, while Vision 2060 points to a long-term strategy for national development. Together, these initiatives could shape both the economic and political landscape in the coming years.
