Social Health Authority (SHA) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi has revealed that the Authority has paid out 1,567 claims amounting to KSh 1.2 billion to police officers injured while on duty.
Dr. Mwangangi made the disclosure on Thursday when she appeared before the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations. She assured senators that SHA remained committed to ensuring that all injured officers receive the benefits they are entitled to.
According to the CEO, 432 claims from police officers were declined for various reasons, while 129 claims remain under dispute. She further explained that 95 claims are still pending due to incomplete documentation. Additionally, 155 claims are currently undergoing payment processing, and 41 claims are under further review.
However, during the Committee session, senators observed discrepancies between the figures presented by SHA and those provided by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH). As a result, Committee Chair Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi directed the three agencies to harmonise their records.
As a committee, we are directing the Social Health Authority, National Police Service Commission and Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services to have an engagement and submit a list that is concurrent with regards to claims
Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi The Committee further urged SHA not to reject or defer any claims on the grounds that the officer was allegedly off duty at the time of the injury, stating that police officers are considered on duty 24 hours a day.
Senators also emphasized that injured officers must not undergo a second medical assessment, reaffirming that DOSH is the only legally mandated body to conduct such evaluations. The lawmakers vowed to push until all affected officers receive their rightful compensation.
