Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi were notably absent from the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa on Tuesday morning. According to sources within the party’s top organ, Sifuna formally conveyed his apology for missing the session but did not disclose the reasons behind his absence. Osotsi, who serves as the Senator for Vihiga, said he was tied up with parliamentary duties in Nairobi.
I did not travel to Mombasa as I am currently in Nairobi attending to my Senate responsibilities
Godfrey OsotsiSpeculation Over Absence
Party insiders suggested that Sifuna’s absence could be linked to simmering tensions within ODM, alongside reports that groups of supporters had been mobilised in connection with the high-stakes meeting. There has also been talk within party ranks about possible leadership realignments, including speculation over the potential elevation of Busia Governor Paul Otuoma to a senior party role. However, the issue remains divisive among members. Some NEC members are said to be pushing for deliberations on Sifuna’s position, while others have warned that such a move could damage the party’s unity and public standing.
Party Urges Internal Democracy
Speaking ahead of the meeting, ODM National Treasurer Timothy Bosire downplayed the disagreements, framing them as part of the party’s democratic culture.
We have always agreed to disagree honourably. This is part of our internal democracy
Timothy Bosire Officials were reportedly briefed on different scenarios and the possible consequences of removing the Secretary General, with emphasis placed on following the party constitution.
Constitutional Provisions
Article 74 of the ODM Constitution outlines circumstances under which a party official may cease holding office. These include expiry of term, death, resignation from office or party membership, bankruptcy, or removal through a resolution of the NEC. The constitution further provides that any removal must follow due process, including giving the affected office bearer adequate opportunity to respond to allegations.
Leaders Close Ranks
Over the weekend, a faction allied to Sifuna signalled readiness to face disciplinary action if necessary. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said members were prepared to defend their political stance even if it meant expulsion and subsequent by-elections. Siaya Governor James Orengo also weighed in, insisting that party members would not be compelled into political arrangements they do not support. He maintained that ODM remains focused on forming a future government and fielding its own presidential candidate, adding that the party would not dissolve or merge into another political outfit.
