National Super League side Soy United FC have bolstered their technical bench with the appointment of Owen Makokha as the club’s new assistant coach, as the team steps up preparations for a decisive phase of the season. The club confirmed Makokha’s appointment in an official statement, announcing his return to the Blue Eagles for a second spell with the team.
Familiar Face Returns to the Blue Eagles
Makokha, who holds a CAF B Coaching Licence, previously worked with Soy United during the club’s inaugural season in 2017. His return is viewed as a calculated move to inject experience, tactical discipline, and continuity into the technical department. He takes over from Samwel Twago, who recently exited the role.
Vast National Super League Experience
The newly appointed assistant coach brings with him extensive experience both on the touchline and in football administration within Kenya’s second-tier league. Makokha previously served at Naivas FC, where he was instrumental in guiding the club to two promotional playoff appearances in both the National Super League and the FKF Premier League qualification rounds. His coaching journey also includes stints at Fortune Sacco, Kibera Blackstars, and Equity Bank FC, earning him recognition as a coach skilled in building competitive and disciplined squads.
Boost for Head Coach Jeffers Odongo
Makokha’s arrival comes at a timely moment for head coach Jeffers Odongo, who recently steered Soy United into the 2026 phase of the season following a hard-fought 2-1 win over Equity Bank FC on January 7, 2026. Odongo has since revealed plans to strengthen the squad during the mid-season transfer window, with the club targeting the addition of around four new players to improve consistency, particularly in away fixtures.
League Position and Promotion Hopes
Soy United’s recent upturn in form has lifted spirits within the camp. The Blue Eagles currently sit 12th on the National Super League table with 19 points from 14 matches, having played one game fewer than several teams above them. While they remain eight points off the automatic promotion places to the FKF Premier League, confidence is growing as the season heads into its second half.
Next Test Against Mombasa United
Makokha will be thrown straight into action as Soy United prepare to host sixth-placed Mombasa United on January 11, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 PM. Buoyed by their recent victory, Soy United will be eager to build momentum, with the revamped technical bench expected to play a crucial role in shaping the club’s push for a strong finish to the campaign.
