Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday, September 7, 2026. The death of Tanzania’s First Gentleman was announced by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Hafidh died at around 8am while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.
According to the Vice President, Hafidh had been receiving treatment for a heart-related condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar before his death. Ndejembi conveyed the government’s condolences to President Samia, the late Hafidh’s family, relatives and friends, as well as Tanzanians following the loss.
Hafidh Ameir’s Marriage to President Samia
Hafidh Ameir and President Samia Suluhu Hassan were married in 1978 and had four children together. Despite being married to one of Tanzania’s most prominent political figures, Hafidh largely maintained a private life and rarely sought the public spotlight.
President Samia became Tanzania’s first female President in March 2021 after succeeding the late President John Pombe Magufuli. She had previously served as Vice President from 2015. As her husband, Hafidh became Tanzania’s First Gentleman, a position he held while largely remaining outside the political spotlight.
Hafidh Ameir’s Professional Background
Hafidh was known for his background in agriculture and maintained a relatively low public profile throughout his wife’s political career. Reports describe him as an agriculturalist and academic from Zanzibar. His private approach meant that details about his professional and personal life were less widely known compared with those of his wife. The couple’s daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has also been involved in public service and politics in Tanzania.
Funeral Arrangements Underway
Following the announcement of his death, funeral arrangements began in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where President Samia has family roots. The government is expected to provide further details regarding the funeral programme and other arrangements as the country continues to mourn the First Gentleman. The announcement has prompted messages of condolence from leaders and members of the public across Tanzania and the wider East African region.
Ruto Sends Condolences
Kenyan President William Ruto has also sent his condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania following Hafidh’s death. Ruto expressed sympathy to the Tanzanian President and her family, saying Kenya stood with Tanzania during the period of mourning. Hafidh’s death marks a significant personal loss for President Samia, who has led Tanzania since 2021, while the country prepares to bid farewell to a First Gentleman who largely remained away from the political spotlight.
