Kenya’s United Opposition has agreed to rally behind a single presidential candidate in an effort to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. The opposition principals reached the agreement on Monday following a retreat in Nairobi, where they also committed to maintaining unity throughout the process of selecting their joint presidential flagbearer.
Opposition Leaders Sign Unity Commitment
In a statement issued after the meeting, the leaders said they would sign a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement. The agreements are expected to commit each principal to remaining united, participating in a credible candidate-selection process and supporting the individual chosen to represent the coalition in the 2027 presidential race. The leaders said their main objective is to put Kenya’s interests first and mount a united challenge against the Ruto administration.
Talks on Presidential Candidate Underway
Sources familiar with the Nairobi meeting said the opposition principals also discussed possible criteria and mechanisms for selecting their joint presidential candidate. The question of who will lead the coalition into the 2027 election is expected to remain a major focus as opposition parties continue their negotiations.
Linda Mwananchi Holds Separate Retreat
The Nairobi meeting came shortly after the Linda Mwananchi faction held its own retreat in Limuru, Kiambu County. The group is working to establish a political vehicle ahead of the 2027 elections, with its political identity and party registration among the issues discussed during the meeting. The October 15 deadline for political parties to submit details of their authorised officials and specimen signatures has also increased pressure on the group to settle on a political vehicle.
UPP Considered as Political Vehicle
Linda Mwananchi has reportedly encountered challenges in registering as a political party and is considering using an existing party to contest the 2027 elections. Among the parties reportedly being considered is the Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP), which is associated with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who attended the Limuru retreat, played down concerns over the movement’s political vehicle, arguing that its strength comes from its supporters.
Orengo Eyes Linda Mwananchi Ticket
Siaya Governor James Orengo is also reportedly interested in contesting the 2027 presidential election under the Linda Mwananchi banner. The developments come as various opposition formations intensify efforts to position themselves ahead of the August 2027 polls. With the opposition seeking to unite behind one candidate, the race to determine who will face Ruto is likely to remain at the centre of political negotiations in the coming months.
