On Wednesday, the streets of Nairobi witnessed a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards sustainable transportation. Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale officially launched the first batch of 100 fully electric vehicles from auto dealer MOJAEV at their Nairobi offices. This exciting debut marks MOJAEV’s entrance into Kenya’s expanding e-mobility landscape with their innovative vehicle brands, Skyworth and NETA. This initiative is poised to play a crucial role in reducing emissions and enhancing air quality in urban areas.

The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. The transport sector currently contributes to 10% of Kenya’s national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and projections indicate that this figure could rise to 17% by the year 2030. The increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to significantly mitigate emissions from the transportation sector, assisting Kenya in achieving its national emission reduction objectives.

Transitioning towards e-mobility is fundamental to Kenya’s Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), as well as the updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and the 3rd National Climate Change Action Plan (NCAP III). These comprehensive frameworks were launched by President William Ruto during the inaugural Africa Climate Summit last year, underscoring the government’s commitment to tackling climate change.

At the flag-off event, Cabinet Secretary Duale was joined by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei and Industry Principal Secretary Juma Mukhwana, all of whom are dedicated to steering Kenya towards a greener future. The introduction of these electric vehicles not only promises a cleaner environment but also represents a pivotal shift in the nation’s approach to sustainable transportation.

As Kenya embraces this electric vehicle revolution, the future looks promising. The collective efforts of the government, private sector, and citizens will be essential in driving this transition and achieving a cleaner, more sustainable environment for generations to come. Let’s accelerate this journey towards a greener tomorrow!
