Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has declared that the “real season starts now” as his side intensifies its pursuit of Premier League leaders Arsenal. City moved to within four points of the Gunners before the international break, following a dominant 3-0 victory over Liverpool a result that came after Arsenal dropped points in a 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

Speaking ahead of City’s clash with Newcastle United on Saturday, Guardiola acknowledged the significance of maintaining pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side. While he praised Arsenal’s “impeccable” form, he noted that the season was still in its early stages.

The feeling that I had in the past when we fought incredibly against Liverpool, I had the feeling that we’ll not drop many points, and if they can take a lot of distance, it will be difficult to catch up

He drew comparisons to last season, when City clinched the league title with four games remaining, but insisted that nothing would be decided in November.

Guardiola explained that the season is divided into two key phases before and after the international break. A win over Eddie Howe’s struggling Newcastle side would reduce Manchester City’s deficit to just one point ahead of Arsenal’s derby showdown with Tottenham.

Guardiola also provided a squad update, confirming that Mateo Kovacic and Rodri remain sidelined.

Everybody is fit except Kova and Rodri. Rodri is making good steps. It’s been almost three weeks since his last setback. He knows he has to take time to recover well mentally and physically, and be consistent from now until the end

City will be hoping to secure a crucial away win to strengthen their title defense as the campaign enters its decisive stretch.
