A 56-year-old Kenyan national has been arrested in Zambia over allegations of involvement in a cybercrime operation targeting government systems ahead of the country’s General Election. Zambia’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said the suspect, identified as Michael Njuka, was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation involving defence and security agencies.
According to Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo, Njuka is alleged to have been contracted to carry out cyber activities targeting critical government systems and potentially interfere with Zambia’s electoral processes. The arrest comes as Zambian authorities investigate what they describe as a wider plot to undermine national security and disrupt the country’s electoral system.
Military Intelligence Found on Seized Devices
Authorities said investigations uncovered sensitive military intelligence information on some of the electronic devices seized during the operation. The discovery has raised concerns over possible unauthorised access to protected government information as security agencies continue investigating the matter. Zambian authorities said they remain on heightened alert and will take lawful action against individuals suspected of threatening national security or interfering with critical systems.
Three Former Officials Also Investigated
Separately, security agencies reportedly recovered more than 7.3 million Zambian Kwacha, estimated at about KSh50 million, from three other individuals identified as Japhen Mwakalombe, Mwila Kakana and Sensho Banda. The three have been asked to account for the source and intended use of the money. Their lawyers, however, said they would only present their clients for questioning after Friday, August 14.
Matembo said the three former senior government officials were being investigated over allegations that they provided technical services intended to disrupt the electoral system. Authorities also said sensitive military intelligence was found on some of the electronic devices recovered from the trio.
Security Agencies Remain on Alert
With Zambia going to the polls, the government has urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant as investigations continue. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said defence and security agencies would continue taking lawful measures to protect national security, critical infrastructure and the integrity of the electoral process.
Authorities warned that anyone found engaging in activities that compromise national security, interfere with critical systems or violate the law would face legal action.
