The Raila Amollo Odinga International Stadium, located within the Talanta Sports City Complex, is now 85 per cent complete, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s preparations to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the progress reflects Kenya’s growing readiness, alongside its PAMOJA partner countries, to successfully stage the continental tournament in line with President William Ruto’s vision for sports development.

Government Officials Inspect Progress

Mvurya made the remarks after leading an inspection tour of the facility alongside Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya. He expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work, noting that construction teams are operating around the clock. According to the Sports CS, the contractor is focused on completing external works and training facilities by the end of February, which will allow auxiliary works to proceed smoothly thereafter.

Other AFCON Projects at Advanced Stages

During the visit, Mvurya also assessed the status of seven additional flagship projects that are essential to the successful hosting of AFCON 2027. He confirmed that all the projects are at advanced stages of construction, reinforcing the government’s assurance that Kenya will meet CAF standards and deadlines.

Whole-of-Government Approach

The Sports CS emphasized that the government has adopted a whole-of-government approach to ensure comprehensive preparedness for the tournament, covering infrastructure, logistics, security, and stakeholder coordination. He added that Kenya is progressing toward formal preparatory engagements with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the near future as part of the final readiness process.

High-Level Attendance

The inspection was attended by senior government officials, including Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports) and Dr Patrick Mariru (Defence), Senior Assistant for Sports Evans Achoki, MOD Brigadier Sokobe, Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo, board chair Hon Mark Lomunokol, and other officials.
