Kenyan sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala has been forced to bring his 2026 athletics season to an early conclusion after suffering a stress fracture in the heel bone of his left foot. The African 100m record holder announced the setback on Tuesday, revealing that the injury will keep him out of his final two planned races of the season.
Omanyala was expected to compete at the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4 and 5 before featuring in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. However, the injury has ruled him out of both season-ending competitions. The 2022 Commonwealth champion said he sustained the injury two weeks before the Commonwealth Games, making it impossible for him to continue with his competitive schedule.

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Omanyala, who had enjoyed one of his more consistent seasons on the international circuit and successfully returned to the Diamond League winners’ circle. He began his outdoor campaign on a strong note by winning the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on April 24. Omanyala clocked 9.96 seconds to finish ahead of South Africa’s Rivaldo Roberts and Canada’s Aaron Brown.
He followed that performance with another sub-10-second run at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, where he finished third in 9.95 seconds. His impressive form continued into the Diamond League series.
Omanyala clocked 9.98 seconds to finish second in Shanghai before securing his first Diamond League victory in more than two years in Xiamen, where he crossed the finish line in 9.94 seconds. Although he struggled in Rome, finishing eighth in 10.11 seconds, the Kenyan responded strongly by winning the national 100m title in 10.00 seconds. He later finished sixth in Paris with a time of 10.02 seconds.
Ranked Third in Diamond League Standings
Omanyala’s consistency throughout the season earned him a place in the Diamond League Final. He finished the 100m standings in third position with 19 points, level with Americans Trayvon Bromell and Jordan Anthony.
Jamaica’s world champion Oblique Seville leads the standings with 23 points, alongside South Africa’s Gift Leotlela. Omanyala had also recorded five consecutive sub-10-second performances, underlining his return to consistent form against some of the world’s leading sprinters.
Misses Chance to Make History
His withdrawal means Omanyala will miss a major opportunity to make history in Brussels. The Kenyan was set to challenge for the Diamond League Final title and potentially become the first Kenyan sprinter to win the prestigious trophy. Instead, his 2026 campaign will end prematurely as he turns his attention to recovering from the heel injury.
Despite the disappointing conclusion, Omanyala reflected positively on his season, describing it as a campaign worth celebrating. He expressed gratitude to his coach, team, sponsors and partners for their continued support throughout the year. With the competitive season now over for the Kenyan sprint star, attention will turn to his recovery and preparations for the next chapter of his athletics career.
