Nairobi Hospital Doctors Raise Concerns Over Prolonged Detention

Four senior doctors from Nairobi Hospital who were arrested over the weekend have approached the court, challenging their continued detention and claiming that their constitutional rights are being infringed. The doctors involved include Dr. John Obwaka, the Director at the Kenya Hospital Association, Nairobi Hospital Board vice-chairman Samson Kinyanjui, directors Valery Gaya, and former director Chris Bichage.

Through their legal team, Danstan Omari, Nelson Havi, and Charles Kanjama, the doctors told the court that their charge sheets had not yet been processed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), despite them being present at the courthouse. The lawyers warned that delays by the prosecution could unfairly cast the court in a negative light for circumstances beyond its control, stressing that the matter should be handled promptly.

The legal team also informed the court that Dr. Obwaka requires urgent medical attention. An ambulance has reportedly been stationed at the court to ensure he receives timely care if necessary.

Magistrate Teresiah Nyangena directed that the matter be mentioned again in an hour, ensuring the case progresses while addressing the doctors’ concerns over their health and rights.
