Kenyan javelin star Julius Yego has officially ended his Commonwealth Games journey after missing out on a place in the final at the 2026 Glasgow Games. Competing in what he confirmed would be his last appearance at the event, the former champion finished 13th overall with a best throw of 74.50 metres—falling short of qualification.
To secure an automatic spot in the final, athletes needed to reach the 84.00m mark. With fewer than 12 competitors achieving that distance, the remaining slots were awarded based on the next best performances. Yego’s throw, however, was not enough to place him among the top 12 advancing to the final. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage led the qualification round with a throw of 82.84m. He was followed by Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who recorded 81.29m, and South Africa’s Douw Smit with 80.64m.
Despite the early exit, Yego leaves behind an outstanding legacy as one of Kenya’s most successful field athletes. He rose to prominence after winning gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He went on to claim the World Championship title in 2015 and earned a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games—cementing his place in athletics history.
Yego’s departure marks the close of a remarkable chapter for Kenyan athletics, particularly in field events where he has long been a trailblazer and inspiration to upcoming athletes.
