Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan deal, with the Spanish club confirming the move on Monday. The Uruguay international will remain at Liverpool until June 30, 2027. While Barcelona did not disclose the financial terms, reports in Spain indicate that Liverpool will cover Araujo’s wages and have an option to make the transfer permanent for €55 million.
The 27-year-old defender had fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick, with young defender Pau Cubarsi emerging as a key figure in the team’s backline. Araujo made 35 appearances across all competitions last season but spent several weeks away from the squad after experiencing mental exhaustion. Following his return in January, he faced increased competition from players including Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin.
Araujo’s arrival comes at a crucial time for Liverpool, who are looking to strengthen their central defence. The Reds recently lost Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid, while Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are currently sidelined with injuries. Araujo is expected to provide additional defensive depth alongside captain Virgil van Dijk. Speaking after completing the move, Araujo expressed his excitement about joining the Premier League club and described the transfer as an important step in his career.
Despite leaving on loan, Araujo remains contracted to Barcelona until 2031 after extending his deal with the Catalan giants in 2025. Liverpool have also added young French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes as part of their defensive reinforcement ahead of the new campaign.
