ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his questions surrounding the circumstances of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death. Speaking during a development tour at Nyakiamo Stadium on Wednesday, Wanga accused Gachagua of disrespecting the late ODM leader and using his death for political purposes. The governor urged the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader to allow Raila to rest and focus on building his own political movement instead of repeatedly invoking the former Prime Minister’s name.
Wanga Recalls Gachagua’s Past Criticism of Raila
Wanga pointed to Gachagua’s previous criticism of Raila, particularly during anti-government demonstrations, arguing that the former Deputy President had been hostile towards the opposition leader while he was alive. She also accused Gachagua of failing to visit the Odinga family to offer condolences following Raila’s death, while continuing to make public statements about him. Wanga said political differences should not be used as a reason to drag Raila’s name into current political battles.
Gachagua Questions Circumstances of Raila’s Death
Gachagua recently raised questions about the deaths of several prominent Kenyans, including Raila Odinga, former Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla and Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno. In his assessment of the Kenya Kwanza administration, Gachagua called for greater clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths. He also raised questions about the medical care Raila received in his final days and aspects of his funeral arrangements, including whether they were consistent with Luo cultural traditions.
Wanga Rejects Gachagua-ODM Alliance
Wanga dismissed Gachagua’s remarks as reckless and inflammatory, warning against statements that could create tension within the community. She also ruled out the possibility of ODM entering into a political alliance with Gachagua ahead of the 2027 General Election, arguing that his political approach does not align with the party’s values. The ODM chairperson maintained that her party would approach the 2027 elections from a position of strength and expressed confidence that ODM would win several elective positions across the country.
