Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of creating his own political challenges, urging him to stop blaming former President Uhuru Kenyatta for the difficulties facing his administration. Speaking during a political tour of Nakuru on Friday, Gachagua said the government should take responsibility for its performance instead of shifting blame to the former president.
Gachagua described himself as Ruto’s main political challenger and vowed to lead efforts to remove him from office during the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua Targets Ruto Over Government Record
The former Deputy President claimed that Ruto inherited a country with public confidence but had since made decisions that contributed to the administration’s current political difficulties. He argued that Uhuru Kenyatta would not be on the ballot in 2027 and therefore should not be portrayed as Ruto’s main political opponent.
Gachagua maintained that he would be the person Ruto would have to face in the next presidential contest, predicting a strong performance by the Opposition. He also claimed that his political influence had grown beyond his traditional support base and said he was taking his campaign to other parts of the country.
Ruto Accuses Uhuru of Supporting Opposition
Gachagua’s remarks came a day after President Ruto accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of supporting Opposition efforts against his administration. Speaking in Eldoret on Thursday, Ruto questioned Uhuru’s record on issues including affordable housing, universal healthcare and education during his time in office. The President alleged that Uhuru was now supporting political figures seeking to challenge his administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
President Defends Government’s Record
Ruto said Kenyans should judge his administration based on its achievements and policies rather than political slogans calling for his removal. The President criticised Opposition leaders for what he described as a lack of clear policy alternatives, arguing that calls for a single-term presidency or demands for his departure do not amount to a comprehensive political agenda. The exchange between Ruto and Gachagua comes as political activity begins intensifying ahead of the 2027 General Election, with both sides positioning themselves for a highly competitive contest.
