The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has revealed that several individuals were penalised for violating the electoral code of conduct during the Ol Kalou by-election held on July 16, 2026.
IEBC Explains Action Taken
IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu said the commission summoned individuals suspected of breaching electoral regulations and took action against them through the Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee. She explained that some offenders were fined or issued warnings, while others challenged the committee’s decisions in court.
Nderitu defended the commission against claims that it failed to act on electoral violations, noting that cases taken to court are subject to judicial determination.
Security Measures Ahead of 2027
The commissioner said the IEBC is strengthening its security arrangements ahead of the 2027 General Election to prevent electoral malpractice. She explained that police officers deployed to polling and tallying centres are trained and briefed as electoral officials and operate under the direction of the returning officer during elections.
Nderitu maintained that the commission remains committed to conducting free and fair elections and ensuring every vote is properly accounted for.
Gachagua Raises Rigging Concerns
During the Ol Kalou by-election, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua raised concerns over alleged plans to interfere with the vote. He urged residents to safeguard their votes at polling stations. However, IEBC Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan dismissed the concerns, saying adequate security personnel had been deployed to polling centres and assuring voters that ballots would be counted after voting concluded.

The commission has reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of elections and strengthening security and enforcement mechanisms ahead of the 2027 polls.
