Mombasa politician and businessman Suleiman Shahbal has reaffirmed his intention to contest the Mombasa governorship in the 2027 General Election despite President William Ruto advising him to stay focused on business. Shahbal, who currently serves as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), said he remains committed to seeking the governor’s seat and will not withdraw from the race.
Speaking after Ruto advised him to concentrate on entrepreneurship, Shahbal maintained that his decision to enter the political contest was driven by what he described as the needs of Mombasa residents.

The businessman made the remarks after President Ruto urged him to abandon his political ambitions and focus on his investments. Ruto made the appeal on Tuesday during the opening of Shahbal’s Special Economic Zone, where he praised the businessman for his entrepreneurial skills, business connections and willingness to make major investments.
The President acknowledged that Shahbal was interested in running for governor but said he was opposed to the plan, urging him instead to continue contributing to the country through business. Shahbal, however, made it clear that Ruto’s advice would not change his decision. He said he would remain in the race unless God or the people of Mombasa decided otherwise.

Shahbal Hints at Independent Bid
The EALA legislator also suggested that he could contest the governorship as an independent candidate. He cited his previous experiences with political parties, including instances where he said he was denied party tickets. Shahbal’s possible independent bid would mark another chapter in his long-running pursuit of the Mombasa governor’s position.
Shahbal’s Previous Governor Bids
The 2027 election would be Shahbal’s third attempt to become Mombasa governor. He first contested the position in 2013 on a Wiper Democratic Party ticket, but lost to then-incumbent Ali Hassan Joho. His subsequent election petition was also unsuccessful. In 2017, Shahbal returned to the race under the Jubilee Party banner but again lost to Joho.
Ahead of the 2022 General Election, Shahbal sought the ODM nomination for the Mombasa governorship. He eventually stepped aside and backed Abdulswamad Nassir, who went on to win the seat. With the 2027 election approaching, Shahbal has now renewed his bid, setting the stage for another contest for the county’s top political office.
