The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has adopted a new name, with opposition leaders announcing that the political outfit will now operate as the Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) ahead of the 2027 General Election. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced the rebranding on Monday, September 21, 2026, saying the decision was reached unanimously by parties within the coalition. Kalonzo described the change as the beginning of a new phase for the opposition alliance as its constituent parties seek to reorganise their structures and broaden cooperation ahead of the next elections.
Uhuru Kenyatta to Lead Transition
Kalonzo said former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has been serving as chairman of the coalition’s council, would convene a Jubilee Party meeting to deliberate on the next steps following the rebranding. He said decisions reached during the meeting would subsequently be communicated to the Ukombozi Alliance as the coalition works towards formalising its new structure.
Kalonzo also said arrangements would be made for the formal transfer of the coalition’s leadership instruments following the necessary party processes. The transition comes as opposition parties continue reorganising and exploring wider cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Orengo, Mwangaza Among Leaders in New Formation
The rebranded alliance has also opened its doors to additional political leaders and formations. Siaya Governor James Orengo was among the leaders present during the announcement, while former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza was also welcomed into the emerging political arrangement.
Orengo said the opposition would operate around the slogan “one term, one team and one coalition,” as leaders seek to consolidate their political activities under the new alliance. He said consultations had been held across the opposition and that the new formation had a common political objective.
Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027
Kalonzo maintained that the opposition would continue working towards greater unity and would seek to address disagreements that could undermine its joint political activities. He also said the alliance would pursue mechanisms for resolving issues involving different opposition formations, including the dispute surrounding Linda Mwananchi at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties. The rebranding is part of a broader restructuring of the opposition coalition as political parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Leaders Criticise Ruto’s Remarks on Uhuru
The leaders also criticised President William Ruto’s recent remarks concerning former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kalonzo and other opposition figures called on the President to stop involving Kenyatta in political disputes and instead focus on his own administration.
The remarks came as debate continues over Kenyatta’s role in opposition politics following his departure from State House and recent legal developments concerning the political rights of retired presidents. The High Court recently declared provisions restricting retired Presidents from holding political party office unconstitutional, adding another dimension to the debate over Kenyatta’s continued political participation.
New Political Identity
The adoption of the Ukombozi Alliance name gives the opposition coalition a new political identity as parties prepare for the 2027 General Election. The coalition has indicated that it intends to bring together different political parties and leaders under a common platform while retaining a focus on cooperation among opposition forces.
