The family of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga has appealed to Kenyans to stop circulating unverified information about his health, saying the reports have caused distress to him and his relatives. In a statement released on Tuesday through ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale, the family confirmed that Oburu was recovering after undergoing several weeks of treatment both in Kenya and abroad. The family urged the public to give him adequate time to rest, regain his strength and recover fully before resuming his public engagements.
Family Expresses Concern Over Online Rumours
According to the statement, the continued circulation of false reports about Oburu’s health has caused concern within the family, with the ODM leader also reportedly disturbed by the claims. Etale said the family was saddened by the spread of what it described as fake news concerning the senator’s health. The family acknowledged that Kenyans have a right to freedom of expression but emphasised the importance of communicating responsibly, particularly when discussing another person’s health and personal circumstances. It called on social media users to respect Oburu’s privacy as he continues his recovery.
Oburu Taking Time to Recover
The family explained that Oburu was taking time to rest following weeks of medical treatment locally and abroad. It appealed to those circulating the reports to allow him to regain his health and energy before returning to active public life. The statement also warned against sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary anxiety and emotional distress to individuals and their families. The family encouraged Kenyans to exercise caution before sharing information online, especially when it concerns sensitive personal matters.
ODM Previously Dismissed Reports
The latest statement follows an earlier response by the ODM secretariat on October 6, when reports about Oburu’s health circulated on social media. At the time, the Office of the ODM Party Leader dismissed the claims as malicious and unfounded, describing them as fake news and propaganda. The secretariat assured the public that Oburu was safe and in good spirits. It further stated that the ODM leader was following his doctors’ advice to rest and avoid strenuous engagements while continuing to receive updates on party activities and national affairs. The family’s latest appeal reiterates its call for the public to avoid spreading unverified claims as Oburu continues his recovery.
