A Nairobi court has allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain police officer Kenneth Kipkeboi Sang for 14 days as detectives continue investigating his alleged involvement in the murders of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and city lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu. Sang was arrested in Eldoret over the weekend following an intelligence-led operation before being transferred to Nairobi to face investigations into the two killings. The DCI had requested additional time to question the officer, record his statement, conduct searches, recover potential evidence and complete inquiries before deciding on the charges to bring against him.
Firearm Linked to Suspect
According to the investigating officer, detectives recovered a Mini Jericho pistol bearing serial number 47302127. A ballistic examination reportedly linked cartridge cases and a bullet head recovered during the investigations to the firearm. Investigators told the court that the weapon had previously been issued to Sang, making him a key suspect in the ongoing probe. The DCI also linked the officer to an alleged earlier attack involving Dr Mutiso. According to the application, Mutiso reported being confronted by two armed individuals riding a motorcycle near Junction Mall along Ngong Road on July 7, 2026.
She reportedly escaped from the encounter and reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station under Occurrence Book number 63/07/07/2026. Detectives suspect Sang may have been involved in planning the alleged attack, although the allegations remain subject to the ongoing investigation and court process.
Investigations Into Two Murders
The DCI further told the court that other individuals suspected of participating in the killings were still at large. Investigators argued that their continued freedom could complicate the probe, citing concerns over possible collusion, flight and interference with evidence. Sang is expected to be charged alongside alleged accomplices who have already been charged before the Milimani High Court in Criminal Case No. HCCRC E004 of 2026 over Mutiso’s murder.
In a separate investigation, detectives have also accused Sang of playing a significant role in the killing of lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu, who was murdered on September 9, 2025. The DCI’s application describes him as a suspected planner of the lawyer’s killing. His alleged accomplices have reportedly been charged before the Kibera High Court in Criminal Case No. HCCRC E019 of 2026.
DCI Raises Flight Risk Concerns
In seeking the 14-day detention period, investigators argued that Sang could be a flight risk, alleging that he deserted his workstation after the incidents and went into hiding. The additional time is intended to allow detectives to question him, conduct further searches and recoveries, address outstanding issues in both investigations and prepare the case for possible prosecution. Investigators also requested that Sang be escorted to hospital for a mental assessment before appearing in court for plea-taking. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against Sang have yet to be determined by a court.
