Airtel Money Eyes Bigger Share of Kenya’s Mobile Money Market

Airtel Money could be stepping up its battle for customers in Kenya’s mobile money industry as the company considers more competitive transaction charges and customer incentives. The strategy would seek to strengthen Airtel Money’s position against Safaricom’s M-Pesa, which has remained the dominant player in Kenya’s mobile money market for years. If implemented, the pricing changes could make Airtel Money more appealing to consumers looking for cheaper ways to send and receive money, pay bills and make everyday payments.

Airtel considers aggressive pricing

Airtel’s parent company is reportedly weighing a more aggressive approach to pricing as it seeks to expand Airtel Money’s customer base in Kenya. The proposed strategy could include reduced transaction fees alongside promotions designed to encourage more customers to use the platform.

Airtel Money could benefit from customers who are willing to switch providers or use multiple mobile money platforms depending on the cost and convenience of a particular transaction. Increased competition could also encourage mobile money providers to review their charges and improve the services they offer consumers.

Customers raise network concerns

While lower fees could attract customers, some Airtel users have argued that the company needs to address network reliability before concentrating on a pricing battle with M-Pesa. Some customers have called for improvements to Airtel’s network, particularly in areas where users experience connectivity challenges. Network stability is particularly important for mobile money services because transactions often need to be completed immediately.

Mobile money has become an important part of daily life in Kenya, with customers relying on the services to send money, pay bills, purchase goods, receive payments and deal with emergencies. For such transactions, reliability can be just as important to customers as the cost of a transaction.

Airtel Money faces an uphill battle

Airtel Money has continued to position itself as an alternative to M-Pesa, using competitive pricing and promotional offers to attract consumers. A stronger pricing campaign could increase pressure on Safaricom and create more competition within Kenya’s mobile money sector.

However, attracting and retaining customers is likely to depend on more than transaction charges. The availability and reliability of the network, ease of using the platform, accessibility of agents, customer service and the range of available financial services could all influence consumer choices. As Airtel seeks to expand its presence in the market, the proposed strategy could provide Kenyan consumers with greater choice while intensifying competition between the country’s leading mobile money platforms.
